ICS Full Form, FSc, FA and Pre-Engineering Explained: Subjects and Careers

ICS full form is Intermediate in Computer Science, a two-year intermediate program. FSc means Faculty of Science (split into Pre-Engineering and Pre-Medical), FA means Faculty of Arts, and ICom means Intermediate in Commerce. Pre-Medical leads to MDCAT, Pre-Engineering and ICS lead to ECAT.

After matric you have to pick an intermediate stream, and the names are confusing. The ICS full form is Intermediate in Computer Science. FSc means Faculty of Science, FA means Faculty of Arts, and ICom means Intermediate in Commerce. This guide gives you the full form of each stream, the exact subjects you study, and which entry test and career each one leads to, so you can choose without guessing.

What is the ICS full form and which subjects does it cover?

ICS full form is Intermediate in Computer Science. It is a two-year intermediate (HSSC) program for students who want to study computing, IT, and software, but do not want Biology or Chemistry. ICS subjects come in three common combinations, where you keep the compulsory subjects and pick one elective group.

  • Group I: Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics
  • Group II: Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics
  • Group III: Computer Science, Economics, Statistics

Every ICS student also studies the compulsory subjects that all intermediate groups share: Urdu, English, Pakistan Studies, and Islamic Studies (Ethics for non-Muslims). The Group I combination with Mathematics and Physics is the most flexible, because it keeps engineering and computer science admissions open.

What does FSc stand for and what are FSc subjects?

FSc full form is Faculty of Science. It is the science-heavy intermediate stream and it splits into two tracks: Pre-Engineering and Pre-Medical. Both run for two years and both share the same compulsory subjects (Urdu, English, Pakistan Studies, Islamic Studies).

FSc Pre-Engineering subjects

FSc Pre-Engineering elective subjects are Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. This is the standard path for students aiming at engineering universities like NUST, UET, GIKI, and PIEAS through the ECAT and NET entry tests.

FSc Pre-Medical subjects

FSc Pre-Medical elective subjects are Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. This is the required stream for medical and dental admissions (MBBS and BDS), which run through the MDCAT entry test, plus allied health fields like pharmacy, physiotherapy, and biotechnology. If you want to read the test details, see our guide on what MDCAT is and how it works.

What is the FA full form and what are FA subjects?

FA full form is Faculty of Arts. It is the arts and humanities intermediate stream for students who do not want heavy science or math. FA subjects are chosen as electives from a wide menu, alongside the same four compulsory subjects.

Common FA elective choices include Economics, Psychology, Education, Civics, Statistics, Fine Arts, Sociology, Islamic History, and various languages. FA gives you flexibility but it does not qualify you for MDCAT or ECAT, so it suits students aiming at BA, law, social sciences, civil services, or teaching.

What does Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medical and ICom mean?

Pre-Engineering and Pre-Medical are the two tracks inside FSc, not separate streams. Pre-Engineering means FSc with Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Pre-Medical means FSc with Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. ICom full form is Intermediate in Commerce, the business-focused stream covering Accounting, Economics, Business Maths, Banking, and Commerce, which leads to BBA, B.Com, ACCA, and finance careers.

FSc vs ICS vs FA: which stream should you pick?

Pick the stream that matches the degree you want, not the one your friends choose. If you want to be a doctor, Pre-Medical is the only option. For engineering, choose Pre-Engineering or ICS with Mathematics. For software and IT, ICS is the most direct path. The table below compares all the main streams.

Can ICS students take ECAT or MDCAT?

ICS students can take ECAT for computer science programs if their combination includes Mathematics, and most engineering universities accept ICS or Pre-Engineering for BS Computer Science admissions. ICS students cannot take MDCAT, because MDCAT requires Biology, which ICS does not include. If your goal is MBBS or BDS, you must be in FSc Pre-Medical. Whichever entry test you are targeting, you can practice MDCAT and ECAT MCQs on Parhlai to build speed and find your weak topics early.

One rule cuts through the confusion: your intermediate subjects decide which entry tests you are eligible for, and those tests decide your degree. Choose the stream that keeps the door open to the career you actually want.
