Why Government Jobs Are Popular in Pakistan

Government jobs offer three things most private jobs do not: lifelong job security, a pension after retirement, and fixed working hours. The trade-off is lower starting salary and slower salary growth compared to the private sector. For graduates who value stability over high earnings, government jobs are the best option. The competition is intense — thousands apply for each position.

CSS (Central Superior Services)

CSS is the most prestigious government job route. It leads to positions in the federal bureaucracy as Assistant Commissioner, Section Officer, or Assistant Director. Eligibility: 21-30 years, bachelor's degree with minimum 60%. CSS is conducted by FPSC once a year. The exam has 1200 marks (written) + 300 marks (interview). Around 15,000-20,000 candidates appear, 400-500 are selected. Preparation takes 12-18 months.

Provincial Civil Service (PCS)

Each province conducts its own civil service exam through the Provincial Public Service Commission (PPSC in Punjab, SPSC in Sindh, KPPSC in KPK, BPSC in Balochistan). PCS officers serve in provincial departments — education, health, agriculture, revenue, and local government. The exam pattern is similar to CSS but easier and province-focused. Selection ratio is higher than CSS.

NTS-Based Grade 16-17 Jobs

NTS (National Testing Service) conducts tests for hundreds of government departments. When a department announces vacancies, candidates take the NTS test, and top scorers are called for interviews. These include jobs in NADRA, WAPDA, PTA, PEMRA, and federal/provincial ministries. Follow the NTS website and individual department career pages for announcements.

Public Sector Banks and Autonomous Bodies

SBP (State Bank) conducts its own exam for Grade 17+ officer positions. NBP, HBL, and other public sector banks hire through management trainee programs. Autonomous bodies like WAPDA, PIA, CAA, OGRA, and PEMRA hire through their own recruitment processes. These jobs often pay better than regular government jobs.
